Comfort, Care, and Time to Breathe

Pregnancy & Postnatal
Massage

Pregnancy Massage—often referred to as Prenatal Massage—is thoughtfully adapted around the physical changes of pregnancy while creating a calm, supportive experience for both body and mind.

Prenatal massage is available after completion of the first trimester. For postnatal care, contact us to discuss your recovery and comfort needs. Visit our Bankers Hill spa near Balboa Park, Hillcrest, and Downtown San Diego.

What Is Pregnancy Massage?

Pregnancy Massage, also commonly called Prenatal Massage, is professional massage thoughtfully adapted around the physical and comfort changes that may occur during pregnancy. The service is designed to create a calm, supported experience while allowing the therapist to address areas such as the back, hips, shoulders, legs, and feet.

Supportive cushions are used for side-lying positioning, and pressure is adjusted according to the guest’s comfort, pregnancy stage, areas of muscular tension, and preferences. The service is performed only by massage therapists who have completed specialized Pregnancy Massage training.

Pregnancy Massage is not medical treatment and does not replace prenatal care. It is a restorative massage experience intended to support relaxation, comfort, and individualized care during a physically demanding season.

Pregnancy Massage at The Knotstop is available once the guest has completed the first trimester.

Why Choose Pregnancy Massage?

Pregnancy can place new demands on the body and mind. This service is designed to create restorative time while adapting the massage around the guest’s changing comfort needs.

Time to Rest

Many guests appreciate having uninterrupted time to slow down, settle into supportive positioning, and step away from planning, work, appointments, and family responsibilities.

Attention to Overworked Areas

Customized massage may help ease the feeling of muscular tension through the lower back, hips, shoulders, legs, feet, and other areas that feel tired or overworked.

Personalized Pressure

Pressure is adjusted around sensitivity, comfort, energy level, areas of focus, and what feels appropriate during the individual appointment.

Supportive Positioning

Side-lying positioning with cushions helps create a supported massage experience without asking the guest to remain in a position that feels uncomfortable.

Is Pregnancy Massage Right for You?

Pregnancy Massage may be a good fit when you want professional massage adapted around comfort, communication, and the changing needs of pregnancy.

Pregnancy Massage May Be a Good Fit If...

  • You have completed the first trimester.
  • Your back, hips, shoulders, legs, or feet feel overworked.
  • You want massage adapted around pregnancy comfort.
  • You prefer gentle-to-moderate or customized pressure.
  • You need uninterrupted time to rest.
  • You value clear communication and supportive positioning.

Contact the Spa Before Booking If...

  • Your pregnancy is considered high-risk.
  • Your healthcare provider has advised against massage.
  • You are experiencing unusual symptoms or new health concerns.
  • You recently had a medical procedure.
  • You have significant swelling, pain, or circulation concerns.
  • You are uncertain whether massage is appropriate.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your appointment begins with a brief conversation about your pregnancy stage, comfort, pressure preferences, and the areas that need the most attention.

Intake and Pregnancy Stage

You will complete intake information and confirm that you have completed the first trimester before the service begins.

Comfort and Pressure Preferences

Your therapist will ask about areas of tension, pressure preference, sensitivity, positioning concerns, and what you want from the session.

Supported Side-Lying Positioning

Cushions are used to create a supported side-lying position that may be adjusted as needed throughout the massage.

Ongoing Communication

Pressure, focus, and positioning can be changed at any point. The appointment concludes slowly so you have time to sit up and move comfortably.

A Quiet Place to Feel Supported

Pregnancy can be physically demanding while also carrying an extraordinary mental load. Appointments, work, family life, preparation, changing routines, and constant decision-making can leave very little time that is not focused on what comes next.

Pregnancy Massage creates a pause from that momentum. The room is quiet, the positioning is supported, and the experience is shaped around what feels comfortable that day. There is nothing to organize, plan, or manage once the session begins.

This is time to reconnect with the body without expectation—to notice where tension has accumulated, breathe more slowly, and allow someone else to provide thoughtful care before life changes again.

Rest does not need to be productive to be valuable.

Comfort That Changes With You

Pregnancy is not one fixed physical experience. Positioning, sensitivity, pressure preference, energy level, muscular tension, and areas of focus may all change from one appointment to the next. Pregnancy Massage is adapted around the guest rather than relying on a single standard routine.

Supportive Positioning

Cushions are arranged to support side-lying comfort. Positioning may be adjusted during the appointment when the body needs a different angle, more support, or time to change sides.

Personalized Pressure

Pressure is based on the guest’s preferences and current sensitivity. A level that felt comfortable earlier in pregnancy may not feel the same later, so communication remains central.

Areas of Focus

The session may emphasize the back, hips, shoulders, legs, feet, or other areas that feel overworked, while avoiding areas where pressure is uncomfortable or inappropriate.

Ongoing Communication

Guests are encouraged to speak up about numbness, nausea, pressure, warmth, positioning, tenderness, or any other change in comfort during the massage.

How the Experience May Change Over Time

Every pregnancy is different. This overview explains how massage preferences and comfort needs may evolve without suggesting that every guest will experience the same symptoms or changes.

After the First Trimester

Once the first trimester has been completed, guests may begin scheduling Pregnancy Massage at The Knotstop. The appointment starts with a review of comfort, medical guidance, positioning, pressure preference, and current areas of muscular tension.

As Comfort Needs Change

Changes in body position, energy, balance, sensitivity, sleep, or muscular demand may affect which areas need attention and how the guest prefers to be supported.

After the Session

Guests are encouraged to rise slowly, notice how they feel, hydrate normally, and contact their healthcare provider about symptoms or concerns that are outside the scope of massage.

Pregnancy Massage should always be adjusted to the individual guest. The stage of pregnancy alone does not determine pressure, focus, or comfort needs.

Before You Schedule

Clear communication helps your therapist provide a comfortable, appropriate massage while recognizing the limits of massage therapy during pregnancy.

Before Booking

  • You must have completed the first trimester.
  • Share relevant pregnancy information when scheduling and during intake.
  • Tell us if your pregnancy is considered high-risk.
  • Consult your healthcare provider when you have medical concerns or have been advised to limit massage.
  • Contact the spa when you are unsure whether the service is appropriate.

During the Appointment

  • Communicate discomfort, numbness, nausea, dizziness, or pressure sensitivity immediately.
  • Ask for positioning changes whenever additional support is needed.
  • Let your therapist know when an area should be avoided.
  • Understand that massage therapists do not diagnose pregnancy conditions.
  • Seek medical guidance for symptoms outside the scope of massage.

When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider First

Most guests simply need to communicate their pregnancy stage, comfort, and relevant health information. Certain circumstances, however, require additional medical guidance before massage is scheduled.

High-Risk Pregnancy

Contact your healthcare provider before booking if your pregnancy has been classified as high-risk or you are being monitored for a pregnancy-related complication.

Unusual or New Symptoms

Postpone massage and seek medical guidance for symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, contractions, fainting, persistent dizziness, fever, severe headache, visual changes, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or sudden severe pain.

Significant or Sudden Swelling

New, sudden, marked, or unexplained swelling should be discussed with a healthcare provider before massage, especially when it occurs with headache, visual changes, pain, or other concerning symptoms.

One-Sided Leg Symptoms

Do not massage an area with unexplained one-sided leg swelling, warmth, redness, tenderness, or pain. These symptoms require prompt medical evaluation.

Placental or Cervical Concerns

Guests being monitored for placenta-related concerns, cervical insufficiency, preterm labor risk, or other obstetric complications should receive provider guidance before booking.

Blood Pressure or Circulation Concerns

Consult your healthcare provider first when you have pregnancy-related hypertension, preeclampsia concerns, a history of blood clots, a diagnosed clotting disorder, or another condition affecting circulation.

Recent Procedure, Injury, or Surgery

Contact the spa and your healthcare provider when you have recently undergone a medical procedure, experienced an injury, or have specific restrictions related to healing or mobility.

Skin Irritation or Infection

Massage should be avoided over open wounds, active skin infections, contagious conditions, severe irritation, burns, or areas that are acutely inflamed.

This guidance is educational and does not diagnose a condition. Contact your obstetrician, midwife, or other qualified healthcare provider whenever you are uncertain whether massage is appropriate.

Guests traveling during pregnancy should follow the guidance of their healthcare provider and choose plans appropriate for their individual circumstances.

Working Professionals

Desk work, standing, commuting, and demanding schedules can contribute to muscular fatigue through the back, hips, shoulders, legs, and feet.

Military Families

Changing schedules, relocations, deployments, and family logistics can add to the mental and physical demands of pregnancy.

Babymoon and Hotel Guests

Visitors staying near Downtown San Diego, Little Italy, Balboa Park, or central hotels may include Pregnancy Massage in a slower, more restorative itinerary.

Postnatal Massage: Care After Birth

After birth, your body is recovering while adapting to feeding, carrying, interrupted sleep and new routines. Postnatal massage offers time for rest and customized attention to areas that feel overworked, with positioning and pressure shaped around your recovery.

Choose Timing Around Your Recovery

There is no single waiting period that fits every birth. Before scheduling, discuss massage with your maternity care provider when you are recovering from a cesarean birth, significant tearing, complications or ongoing symptoms. Follow your discharge instructions and any activity restrictions.

Tell Guest Services when you gave birth and about relevant restrictions so we can discuss the appropriate service and therapist before you book.

Make Comfort the Priority

Share any breast tenderness, feeding or pumping considerations, incision sensitivity and positions that feel uncomfortable. Ask about cushioning and position changes rather than assuming you need to lie face down.

Postnatal massage is for comfort and relaxation; it is not incision treatment, pelvic-floor rehabilitation or a replacement for postpartum follow-up care.

Prefer Skincare Instead?

A facial can offer quiet time and personalized care when massage is not the experience you want. Let us know you are pregnant or breastfeeding before booking so your esthetician can review the exact products, enhancements and positioning with you.

The Knotstop Signature Facial

Our recommended starting point for a conversation about gentle, customized skincare. Ask your esthetician about a hydration-focused approach using appropriate cleansing, soothing products and moisturization.

The standard facial and its included enhancement still require review; not every product or enhancement is appropriate for every pregnancy.

The Luminous Facial

Another option to discuss when dryness or a stressed-feeling moisture barrier is your main concern. Its menu focus on nourishment and barrier support may align with your goals.

Ask your esthetician to review the full protocol first. This is a consultation option, not a guarantee that the standard treatment is suitable without changes.

Choose the products, not just the facial name. Retinoids should be avoided during pregnancy. Strong peels, stimulating treatments and device-based enhancements need individual review rather than automatic inclusion. Organic or natural labeling does not establish pregnancy suitability. Consult your healthcare provider about ingredient concerns and prescribed skincare; breastfeeding also calls for a separate review.
